Some days begin with smooth skies.
Today began with turbulence.
When I woke up, I realized something. Every appointment for the weeks ahead had been lined up except today’s ride to my primary care physician. My appointment was only a couple of hours away, Absolute Care didn’t open until 8:00, and I had no idea who would be piloting Pioneer.
The old version of me would have spiraled.
Instead, I opened my journal.
Morning Pages became the flight controls.
As I wrote, I reminded myself:
“Pathfinder is steady on course. Just some turbulence.”
Nothing outside had changed.
But I had.
Eventually the answer arrived.
A Lyft driver became Pioneer’s pilot, and the mission continued without drama.
At my appointment another unexpected discovery appeared.
276.6 pounds.
Only a few pounds away from the weight listed on my driver’s license, and the lightest I’ve been since COVID. The mission was never about losing weight. It was about alignment. Apparently my body noticed anyway.
The visit also revealed an enlarged heart, something my doctor wants to follow moving forward. Another item for Mission Control’s checklist. Information, not panic.
Back home I refueled with multigrain oatmeal, real maple syrup, and coffee before giving myself permission to take a short nap.
Later another quiet victory arrived.
Someone asked what could go into a care package.
A week ago I probably wouldn’t have known.
Today I did.
Dry pinto beans.
We checked the label.
Mission approved.
It wasn’t really about the beans.
It was about realizing how much this mission has already taught me.
Dinner came from yesterday’s work.
Leftover jasmine rice turned out to be hiding beef, vegetables, and spices from the crock pot I’d made over the weekend. Sometimes the galley surprises its own crew.
The evening brought another kind of progress.
Today became less about thyroid cancer and more about quietly building the future waiting beyond it.
The biggest milestone was commissioning the first official Pathfinder business cards.

The card isn’t meant to sell anything.
It’s an invitation to continue a conversation.
I also ordered a metal business card holder that will live in my travel vest beside my pocket journal and pen, with room reserved for a future Pathfinder challenge coin.
Looking back, I realized I’ve always invited people into conversations, even when all I had was a torn piece of notebook paper.
The cards simply make the invitation easier.
I intentionally scheduled delivery for July 20, the day of my radioactive iodine treatment.
While I’m beginning one journey of healing in the hospital, Pathfinder will quietly be arriving at home, ready for the chapter that follows.
We also explored future Pathfinder artifacts:
Challenge coin
Coffee mugs
Journals
Pens
Stickers
Bookmarks
Notebooks
Other field-kit items
These aren’t merchandise.
They’re artifacts that naturally belong in the Pathfinder universe.
I even realized my brother John may be the perfect person to ask about military-style challenge coins.
Today wasn’t about launching something.
It was about preparing for what comes next.

Captain’s Reflection
This morning began with uncertainty.
By evening, I wasn’t thinking about missed rides or medical appointments.
I was thinking about the future.
Pathfinder isn’t replacing the Mission Log.
It’s growing out of it.
Not through grand announcements.
Through one aligned decision after another.
One Sol.
One mission.
One step forward.
