Date: July 5, 2026
Today marked the maiden voyage of Pioneer.
Yesterday, Galileo completed her final mission with honor.
Today, a new shuttle officially entered service.
Her first destination wasn’t a grocery store or a doctor’s office.
It was a place built for explorers.
The Field Museum.
David and I spent the day wandering through exhibits that reminded me why curiosity matters.
Dinosaurs.
Ancient civilizations.
Natural history.
The story of life itself.
Exploration has a funny way of slowing time.
There was no schedule to conquer.
No deadline to meet.
Only the next exhibit waiting around the corner.
One unexpected discovery made me laugh out loud.
Hidden inside the museum gift shop sat a free-play Pokémon pinball machine.
No quarters.
No tickets.
Just an invitation to play.
It felt strangely symbolic.
Somewhere along the way adulthood teaches us to stop exploring unless there’s a purpose.
Today reminded me that curiosity is purpose enough.
The museum’s gift shop became part of the expedition.
I returned home with a few treasures:
A Pokémon Fossils T-shirt.
A Pokémon Museum T-shirt.
Pokémon Wisdom: A Journal for Embracing Your Inner Trainer.
The journal especially caught my attention.
For someone who has spent the past year filling Morning Pages and Mission Logs, another journal didn’t feel like another notebook.
It felt like another invitation to keep exploring.
After the museum, David and I stopped at Steak ‘n Egger for breakfast.
Finding something compatible with my low iodine diet has become much easier now that reading labels has become second nature.
When the waitress explained the grits came straight from the box with nothing added, I smiled.
Mission Control approved.
I began scientifically.
A few bites plain.
Then a little pepper.
Then sugar.
After careful field testing…
🏆 Sugar won.
Sometimes research requires experimentation.
Sometimes breakfast does too.
After breakfast, Jeff assumed shuttle pilot duties for the trip home.
By 1330, Pioneer entered Shuttle Bay.
Mission accomplished.
The Captain immediately requested scheduled maintenance.
Translation:
I took a nap.
Later in the day I realized just how tired I really was.
Nothing seemed to make much sense.
I considered writing.
I considered playing Pokémon.
I considered World of Warcraft.
In the end, I realized something important.
Sunday doesn’t have to be productive.
Sometimes the most aligned decision is simply to rest.
Tomorrow will bring its own mission.
Tonight belongs to recovery.
Looking back over the day, Pioneer couldn’t have asked for a better first assignment.
Not because of the destination.
Because of what it represented.
Yesterday I retired H.O.P.E.
Today I practiced exploration.
No pressure.
No rescue mission.
Just curiosity.
Maybe that’s what Pathfinder has been trying to teach me all along.
Alignment isn’t always found by working harder.
Sometimes it’s found by allowing yourself to wonder.
