Meet Florence Scovel Shinn
I was introduced to the complete writings of Florence Scovel Shinn in 1991, when I opened my first business. It was a gift to launch that my Wellness Center. I use the book when I am looking for an answer. I do this by randomly opening a page and read it. It's one of those books you might keep on your desk to gain inspiration from.
Florence Scovel Shinn (1871-1940) was an American artist, book illustrator, and a true visionary. She was a spiritual woman and discussed the wisdom in the bible. Just 5 years after the 19th Amendment was passed allowing women to vote. In 1925 she wrote the Game of Life and How to Play it.
Wrote four books:
- The Game of Life (1925)
- Your Word is Your Wand (1928)
- The Secret Door to Success (1940)
- The Power of the Spoken Word
The Game of Life
The invisible forces are ever working for man who is always ‘pulling the strings’ himself, though he does not know it. Owing to the vibratory power of words, whatever man voices, he begins to attract.
~ Florence Scovel Shinn, The Game of Life
Shinn (1925) suggested that life was a game and the quality of life depended on how well you played. Her underlying philosophy was that Jesus taught that life is a great game of giving and receiving. All the rules can be found in the Old and New Testament.
The philosophies are not new and have been expressed many ways by many people and religions:
- What so ever a man soweth that shall also reap - King James Bible
- Sir Isaac Newton's Law of Cause and Effect
- The belief in Karma
- John C. Maxwell: The Law of Attraction
- Napoleon Hill: Think and Grow Rich
If you paint in your mind a picture of bright and happy expectations, you put yourself into a condition conducive to your goal.
