Uncluttering My Own Life

I have to be flat out honest. My office became a closet. I was spread myself thin with my coffee business, dissertation, podcast, and still itching to write that novel or screenplay. I wasn't doing good service for anyone, including myself.

My son, David, was really trying to help me get uncluttered. Even told me how and what to Read/Listen to. He recommended that I listen to or read Unstuff Your Life: Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good by Andrew J. Mellen.

Seeing the Forest from the Trees

I'm a kinesthetic learner, which means I need someone to show me what you're talking/writing about. I was at wits end until I sought professional help. I got that help from Cathy of Elite Personal Assistants in the Chicago Area. She helped me create my zones based on what I do, which include my coffee business, dissertation and research, podcast and blogging, and creative writing. I had to learn to let go of stuff.

Letting Go

I had to get tough on myself and realize it's just stuff. Mellen (2010) suggested that in order to move forward you have to let go of those things that are holding you back. I had to let go of my attachment to things. I have thing I cherish like my lighthouses, Bilbo Baggins' sword Sting from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, dream catchers, and Albert Einstein. The rest is clutter.

4 Ways I'm Uncluttering

What I am doing to Unclutter:

  1. Ask yourself: what do I do in this office and what do I need
  2. Define the sections in the room
    • Coffee Business - My financial support. Will be stored in repurposed closet
    • Dissertation and studies - Graduate by July 2015. Will be in bookshelves on one wall
    • Podcasting and Blogging - Passion. Will be shelving by desk and computer
    • Novel and Screenwriting - Passion. Will be in bookshelves on another wall
  3. Everything has a place
  4. Put like with like

Rule 10 of Og Mandino's 17 Rules for a Better Way to Live talks about our connection to others and how those connections could change your life. I have to agree, the connections I've made so far have helped transform my life for the good. I use a mathematical theory, called Game Theory, to define connectedness because it explores human/non-human interactions in order to achieve common goals.

In my business it's not about coffee but about the people I meet along the way. I have to appreciate Dr. Walker and my Organo Gold family who are like minded, want to reach for similar goals and be successful. Dr. Hamilton who want to see me succeed in business as well as completing my research.

For a future episode: Goals. Let's blog our goals.

For my dissertation the primary focus will examine connections to other students, instructors and the university with the students best interest in mind. Kelly (2003) stated that the purpose of game theory is to find optimal situations as well as situations in conflict in order to create cooperation and have the students best interests in mind. I felt disconnected and that no one on the inside cared about my success and just wanted my money. In my study, I will explore how social media and a cohort model that could be used to enhance connectedness for doctoral students during the dissertation process or online graduate studies.

I weighed in Wednesday and didn't update my blog post. I have to say, "#WootSauce" I lost 100 pounds. I weighed in at 280.8 pounds this week. This is a major mile stone and about the halfway mark to my goal of 189. I have to thank my family for their support, Organo Gold for for the awesome products, my Organo Gold Family for their encouragement, and most of all God for His blessings.

I'm proud of the transformation physically, mentally, and financially. This is a huge milestone not only for my health but also my business. I have way less stress and feel amazing. I'm also practicing my golf swing and do a little dance every now-and-then. I am happy and grateful now that I have created a new lifestyle.

I've been asked what foods I miss. I say, "None," because I can eat what I want. There are food I choose not to eat: breads, deserts, fried foods, and red meats. I think I could live a vegetarian lifestyle at this point. Right now I chose not to because I still like chicken, turkey and fish. If I choose to have french fries or something sweet, I don't punish myself like I used to.

  2. Confidence – Know that you know. You are the expert and people will look to you as a leader.
  3. Courage – Have a fighter’s mentality. Never give up attitude. Be Persistent.
  4. Commitment – Commit to the process no matter how long it may take. Keep your promise to yourself and others.

Brainstorming (2014) is the pondering of ideas in order to come up with a solution, a new book idea, overcoming writers block, or finding your brand. I like brainstorming ideas for screenplays, novels, or dissertation or podcast ideas. I find it fun and easy to do. I've even brainstormed this podcast.

Brainstorming this podcast. I worked with Dave Jackson, of the School of Podcasting, and Erik K. Johnson, your Podcast Talent Coach. We looked at my passion of personal development, hypnosis and coffee. Then we looked at my challenges as an online student working on my PhD.  I wanted to find connections with my other classmates, instructors and like minded people like you. That's how The Coffee Couch was born.

Question Yourself

The questions that were the starting point for my podcast:

  • Who is my audience? I chose graduate students in their 40s to 50s. I came up with that by googling the average age o of online students about 35 to 40. I wanted to include people my own age who started later than most. I think of my fellow classmates in my dissertation cohort when I record.
  • What do I know? I know about online learning, social media, personal development, hypnotherapy, the dissertation process, and coffee.
  • What am I passionate about or love? I passionate about making a difference and helping others. I want to see you succeed.
  • What does my audience love? I started looking at statistics from the hits to blog posts. I found that my information on the dissertation writing, personal development and coffee got the most views.  That is still a mystery. Let me know what you're passionate about?

Brainstorming Exercises

  1. Subscribe to Blogs or Podcasts: Find our what others are thinking about what you're passionate about.
  2. Funnel Approach: Take a broad topic, Start narrowing it down, keep tightening until you have a specific topic.
  3. Put ideas in a hat: Take small pieces of paper, write your ideas on each one (no limit), and then pull out 3. Write those 3 ideas in a notebook or your journal. See what you get.
  4. Get together with your mastermind group: Sit down with friends, instructors, writers group, or even your family They might not get what you're working on but you never know what will come up.

I always wanted to help people. At first I wanted to be a paramedic. Then I thought I'd like to be a doctor. I never did either, YET. At least not a medical doctor.

I ended up in Nursing after my father passed. As a result of a class I took, I became a certified hypnotist. I'm working on my Ph.D. to make a difference in adult education. I will be Doctor Dan.

This podcast has helped my in more ways then one. I get to help people in a way I never thought about. I decided what I want to do when I grow up... Be a Coach. Now I hope to help you.

  4. Send a card or gift: Just let someone know you are thinking of them. Reach out and touch someone.
  5. Volunteer: Volunteer in your community, for an organization, or a hospital (which is how I met my wife 35 years ago)

  7. Stop and help a stranger: Stop and help someone stranded on the side of the road.

The Temptation

I love my coffee business and what it has done for  me physically and financially. This last weekend my buddy, while helping his coffee business, kept referring to other network marketing programs he was involved in. After the event was over he told me about his success at losing 19 pounds over the past few months and made me one of his shakes to try.

I said, "I've lost 83 pounds with my coffee and capsules ( since the beginning of June 2014", which is very significant since I don't work out or starve myself. I realized I was very happy and grateful for my coffee company and the benefits it provides me and my family. My buddy was trying to get me to be a customer for a product that I have tried in the past without the success I'm having now.

Shakes are good, they provide nutrients and stuff, but I forget to make one as I'm running out of the house with my coffee. I have to ask why should I buy another shake product when I have several in my house that have probably expired like my stationary clothes hanger.

I probably should have said no but he said to get his coffee in, he adds it to the shake. I thought, "how interesting make me one of those". I tried it both ways and loved the one with the coffee. Gee! it tasted like my mocha only cold with a teaspoon of peanut butter. I feel a new coffee recipe coming on, peanut butter mocha.

How to Resist Temptation

  1. Just say NO - For some that could be difficult especially if you work real hard to help others. Clear (2014) suggested that learning to say no should be a developed skill to help you in any endeavor. I have to agree.
  2. Remember Your Goals and Dreams - Ask yourself will this take me away from or toward my goals and dreams
  3. Who are you listening, What are you reading - if you hang around and listen to people who are living your dream, you'll more then likely succeed especially if you imitate them and do what they do. Hill (1937) suggested that you should have a mastermind alliance and surround yourself with people who will help you reach your goals and dreams.

In other words, research what you do in your field of work or industry by creating improvements in your field or positive social change. My field of study is social media, hence the podcast. I want to improve student retention rates.

What is the 30 Day Mental Fast

This was inspired by Jerry Clark's 30 Day Mental Fast for Millionaires:

  1. Read Uplifting Material for 15-20 Minutes A Day
  2. Turn Off The Television
  3. Turn off the Radio
  4. No Newspapers
  5. Associate Only with Uplifting People
  6. Drink Water
  7. Exercise At Least 20 Minutes A Day
  8. Reflect on the Good for 30 Minutes Each Day

I have slightly modified because I discovered one more thing that added value for me. I use it to work with my goals and dreams to become millionaire as an owner of an International Gourmet Coffee Business, writer, and public speaker. The mental fast has helped me gain better mental clarity and prioritize what's important.

November is not only NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month) but also has 30 days in it, whink means a great time for doing the Mental Fast. As a writer this is perfect because it incorporates time to read. I read everything from journal articles for my research and books on personal development to fiction and books on how to improve my craft.

  1. No TV, Newspapers, or Radio - I found them not only a horrible time waster but also a huge source of negativity
  2. No Negativity - Not only in what you listen to but also your words
  3. Read a Good Uplifting Book for 15 minutes - As a writer I find this easy. I not only read books like Think and Grow Rich, The Magic of Thinking Big but also some fiction and non-fiction to help improve my writing craft
  4. Listen to Personal Development Audio - I listen to a lot of personal development audios from Holton Buggs' How to Turn Your Network Marketing Business Into a Cash Cow (for Organo Gold Distributors) and Zig Ziglar's Goals. I listen to podcasts on the craft of writing, public speaking and living a better life, for example Michael Hyatt's This is Your Life Podcast. Who are you listening to?

Why I Want to Lose Weight

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and morbid obesity with an A1C of 7.1 and weighed in at 380 lbs over a year ago, when I was laid off from Chicago Public Schools in June 2013. My doctor suggested that I start taking medicine or lose weight. I discovered over the years after trying many weight loss products and fad diets that I had to change my approach. Robbins (1991) suggested that your past doesn't equal your future. This meant I had to do something different.

In March 2014 I was stuck just over 345 until May when I had a chance to hang with the millionaires in my coffee company. I was sitting in the back of a coach bus with 2 (Mr. Jose Ardon and Ivan Alberts) who were talking about driving Ferrari's on the Autobahn in Germany and shot me a challenge to join them. I knew to do that I needed to have the financial freedom to do that and lose weight so I could travel comfortably. I reached a point of being sick and tired of losing and gaining weight.As of my last physical my A1C was 5.1. My last weigh in, I was 306. This time it had to be permanent and part of my scholarly journey.

How This Applies to Your Scholarly Journey

Like any good race, you need to be in peak performance and have the stamina to get to the finish line. Those late night writing sessions. Preparing to defend your dissertation. As I have lost the weight I find that I have more stamina and some mental clarity. I found that when my health was failing so was my productivity. I want to look good walking across the stage at graduation too.

I started slowly and with great effort I had been losing a pound a week. Then in May 2014 when I made a decision, I kicked it into overdrive. Schwarts (1987) suggested that you are your own laboratory and can experiment on yourself. I did that and found my 4 steps that helped me lose 74 pounds.

4 Steps to Weight Loss

  1. Make A Decision
    1. To get healthy
    2. To fit comfortably in booths and airplanes
    3. To make it a permanent change
    4. My Goal is 224 pounds, what I weighed on my honeymoon 1984
  2. Create the Picture in Your Mind
    1. Last time I weighed 224 was in 1984 (I will look for the picture)
    2. I picture myself traveling all over the world in comfort and style
    3. Goal is to race Ferraris on the Autobahn in Germany
  3. Change Your Coffee! Change Your Life!
    1. I infused my body with Ganoderma
    2. I didn't drink any other brand of coffee or teas
    3. Goal to create financial freedom
  4. Experiment with Your Body
    1. I gave up breads and desserts (became easy by drinking the mocha or hot chocolate)
    2. I did a few detoxes with fruit fasts
