Uncluttering My Own Life

I have to be flat out honest. My office became a closet. I was spread myself thin with my coffee business, dissertation, podcast, and still itching to write that novel or screenplay. I wasn't doing good service for anyone, including myself.

My son, David, was really trying to help me get uncluttered. Even told me how and what to Read/Listen to. He recommended that I listen to or read Unstuff Your Life: Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good by Andrew J. Mellen.

Seeing the Forest from the Trees

I'm a kinesthetic learner, which means I need someone to show me what you're talking/writing about. I was at wits end until I sought professional help. I got that help from Cathy of Elite Personal Assistants in the Chicago Area. She helped me create my zones based on what I do, which include my coffee business, dissertation and research, podcast and blogging, and creative writing. I had to learn to let go of stuff.

Letting Go

I had to get tough on myself and realize it's just stuff. Mellen (2010) suggested that in order to move forward you have to let go of those things that are holding you back. I had to let go of my attachment to things. I have thing I cherish like my lighthouses, Bilbo Baggins' sword Sting from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, dream catchers, and Albert Einstein. The rest is clutter.

4 Ways I'm Uncluttering

What I am doing to Unclutter:

  1. Ask yourself: what do I do in this office and what do I need
  2. Define the sections in the room
    • Coffee Business - My financial support. Will be stored in repurposed closet
    • Dissertation and studies - Graduate by July 2015. Will be in bookshelves on one wall
    • Podcasting and Blogging - Passion. Will be shelving by desk and computer
    • Novel and Screenwriting - Passion. Will be in bookshelves on another wall
  3. Everything has a place
  4. Put like with like

Rule 10 of Og Mandino's 17 Rules for a Better Way to Live talks about our connection to others and how those connections could change your life. I have to agree, the connections I've made so far have helped transform my life for the good. I use a mathematical theory, called Game Theory, to define connectedness because it explores human/non-human interactions in order to achieve common goals.

In my business it's not about coffee but about the people I meet along the way. I have to appreciate Dr. Walker and my Organo Gold family who are like minded, want to reach for similar goals and be successful. Dr. Hamilton who want to see me succeed in business as well as completing my research.

For a future episode: Goals. Let's blog our goals.

For my dissertation the primary focus will examine connections to other students, instructors and the university with the students best interest in mind. Kelly (2003) stated that the purpose of game theory is to find optimal situations as well as situations in conflict in order to create cooperation and have the students best interests in mind. I felt disconnected and that no one on the inside cared about my success and just wanted my money. In my study, I will explore how social media and a cohort model that could be used to enhance connectedness for doctoral students during the dissertation process or online graduate studies.

Last Day First Day: TCC Episode 40regrets

Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find "tomorrow" on the calendars of fools. Forget yesterday's defeats, and ignore the problems of tomorrow. This is it. Doomsday. Last Day

I had a near death experience many years ago. My father was there to meet me before I went into the light. He told me that it wasn't my time and I had something to do. I realized that God or the Universe wanted me to just pick something to do to make a difference in the world. It took me a minute to figure it out.

What if you discovered that you only had minutes to live and the world was coming to the end. What would you do? Who would you call?

Willhite (2000) suggested that today is the first day and the last day of the rest of your life. There are no guarantees that tomorrow will come. Why not live as though today were the last day of your life. Would you live your life more fully?

Mandino suggested that, with so little time, there is no time to hate, gossip, or fighting only time to love, encourage, or finding joy. Willhite (2000) continued that we should all be busy doing and being that we have no time for anything but accomplishing good.

How To Make Your Last Day Your First Day

  1. Step outside your comfort zone - Face a fear, make a new friend, do something uncomfortable like public speaking or starting a blog
  2. Do something spontaneous - Start that bucket list and start doing some of them
  3. Tell someone you care about or love them - Whether they be a spouse, child, or a complete stranger

Before 6/12/2014 and After 8/19/2014 - Holding the shorts that I wore in the before picture 🙂

I weighed in Wednesday and didn't update my blog post. I have to say, "#WootSauce" I lost 100 pounds. I weighed in at 280.8 pounds this week. This is a major mile stone and about the halfway mark to my goal of 189. I have to thank my family for their support, Organo Gold for for the awesome products, my Organo Gold Family for their encouragement, and most of all God for His blessings.

I'm proud of the transformation physically, mentally, and financially. This is a huge milestone not only for my health but also my business. I have way less stress and feel amazing. I'm also practicing my golf swing and do a little dance every now-and-then. I am happy and grateful now that I have created a new lifestyle.

I've been asked what foods I miss. I say, "None," because I can eat what I want. There are food I choose not to eat: breads, deserts, fried foods, and red meats. I think I could live a vegetarian lifestyle at this point. Right now I chose not to because I still like chicken, turkey and fish. If I choose to have french fries or something sweet, I don't punish myself like I used to.

Unclutter Your Life

We all have 24 hours in a day. Uncluttering your life doesn't only mean the mess on my desk but also the mess in my mind. Three areas where I found clutter:

  • Physically - my weight, writing, office, and car
  • Mentally - focused thought and personal development
  • Spiritually - prayer and meditation

I recommend Tim Ferriss' The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich, which helped me figure out just how to unclutter my life and get the most out of 24 hours.

Og Mandino said it best, "We need to make room for when life throws us a real challenge." You never know what life will bring and having an uncluttered life could help. I used to think I had to do everything. I used to waste time just figuring out what I had to do and when I had to do it by. I found a few tools to help along the way.

Tools and Apps to Help Unclutter Your Life

  1. Calendar - I still use an old school calendar for tracking what I need to do. I use electronic calendar primarily for reminders. I work on my schedule at the end of each month.
  2. Evernote - Some apps are hard to imagine working without. Evernote is one of those for me. It’s my digital diary, note taker, research depository, and so much more. It’s allowed me to jot down ideas, track websites, work on my podcast show notes, and taking notes in meetings or conferences.
  3. Dropbox - Dropbox is another of those apps I won't work without. I got tire of losing jump drives or not synchronizing the information between computers. Dropbox saved my presentation in Thailand because I was able to log on and download it.
  4. Keynote - I use Keynote for all my presentations (especially for my dissertation), vision board, and organizing writing projects. It’s intuitive, very functional, and fun to use.
  5. Scrivener (Mac) (Windows) - I use Scrivener for all my novel, screen, and dissertation writing. It allows me to turn outlines into books with index card view. There are templates for all types of project formats.

  3. Schedule a specific time to checking email, regular mail and social media.
  4. Make time to play

Each Day is a Special Gift

You could say life isn't fair or life deals you a bad hand. In my case, I thought I'd have my job for a long time since I was a Department Head and Tech Coordinator, important positions (I thought). It's interesting how you don't appreciate something until it has been taken away. I did attend that ugly self-pity party for a while, got stuck in anger. Then I was able to turn it around.

It's how we respond to life's challenges that's important. Hill (2005) stated that with every adversity holds the seed of a greater or equal opportunity. I started my own business and now go back and sell my wares at the same place that laid me off. What if there was no tomorrow? We are never guaranteed a tomorrow. Everyday above ground is a good day. Make the most of each day.

How to Make Each Day A Gift

  1. Thank God for What You Have - your family, friends, health, business, etc...
  2. Tell Your Family That You Love Them - make sure they know how you feel before it's too late
  3. Help Someone Else - When you help someone else succeed, you'll succeed
  4. Make a new friend - join a group or organization, go back to school
  5. Smile - especially to that person you see in the mirror everyday
  6. Make each moment count - don't waste time, we all get the same 24 hours a day

Picture placing your fist into a pail of water. Take it out. Wow, no hole. If that measures our importance, there is no hole. Does it we we have no importance, no to me it means that your words carry no weight but your actions do. Your actions speak volumes!

Actions Speak Louder than Words

It's a new year! Most people have made resolutions. Let your actions speak for you by making your dreams come true.

I had to stop talking and start doing. How could I ask someone to do something I wasn't willing to do or have done myself. I like to lead by example. I will be the best example I can be.

My goals for 2015:

  1. Continue to take off weight and weigh 220 pounds by June 12, 2015
    • Make a Decision
    • Create that mental image of your desired weight
    • 30 Day Coffee Challenge
    • Eat Healthy
  2. Build my International Gourmet Coffee Company and become a coffee millionaire by June 30, 2015
  3. Finish my dissertation and graduate with my Ph.D. by July 2015

In order to make 2015 my year! To have the most amazing life, I asked myself, "What actions can I do that I didn't do in 2014?" Following are some action that I will work on in 2015:

  • Show my company to 400 people in the next 180 days
  • Sample coffee to 10 people a day
  • Write more than once a week other than my Podcast show notes
  • Write at least 15 minutes a day
  • Complete my book projects
  • Finish my dissertation

What Are Some Actions You Can Do

  1. Create some goals and dreams
  2. Make a Decision
  3. Write them down and picture it in your mind
  4. Take action everyday to achieve your goals and dreams
  5. Create an accountability system

The foundation of the story of Peter Pan is "Think Happy Thoughts." It gave Peter the power to soar like an eagle. In the movie Hook, Peter became a man and forgot that lesson of thinking happy thoughts. It took a group of kids and the thought of losing his son, to see what made him happy.

Your children need role models not critics

My 5 F's or core values are Faith, Family, Friends, Fitness, and Finance. My second one is family. We just went through the holidays surrounded with family and loved ones. Why not do that more often?

I had to break some old patterns passed from generation to generation. I made a decision to be there for my children. I made a decision to be a positive influence on his life.

How to be a Positive Influence

  1. Positive talk: When my son was very young, I talked positively to him as he slept telling him that he's the best and that he's loved.
  2. Take time to be with family: Why wait for the holidays, graduation or funeral to surround yourself with family.
  3. Be a positive role model: Show don't tell that you stand for something better than yourself. Show that you affect others positively.

Your Past Doesn't Equal Your Future

Mandino (1990) suggested, rule 3 for a better way to live, that when you make a mistake or life knocks you down, don't dwell on it too long. Robbins (1991) suggested your past doesn't need to equal your future. Thomas Edison found 9,999 ways not to make a lightbulb.

I've made a few mistakes along the way. There are lessons to be learned. Sometimes I'll make the same mistake again and again, means I need to try something different. There are somethings you can do to help you not to dwell on past mistakes.

Don't Look Back

  • Picture your dreams: Create a vision board, write down your goals and dreams, read them everyday, create affirmations
  • Don't Quit: Just keep showing up. Persistence pays.
