Discipline Yourself

Discipline yourself! Successful people are, for the most part, very good at self-discipline. They develop a plan and follow it while maintaining motivation and will power. This has been tough for me to overcome because I have a tendency to be very hard on myself and put things off to the last minute. Here are a few thing to help get over it.

  • Don't beat yourself up for being undisciplined: Beating myself up was my failsafe and something I'm good at; however, it never helped and made me feel less motivated and depressed. I would also neglect my health and eat all those things that make you feel good. Hah! the downside was that it was a short term fix.
  • Think about your Big Why: My Big Why are my life goals. I always have to step back at this point and look at my Big Why. Today, I realized that I forgot to expand my Personal Goals by adding Physical Goals, which I will keep working on.
  • Make a Plan: I never had a good one. My plan was getting a job work 'til I retired and moved to Florida. Well that plan didn't work out so well. This exercise in mental change made it abundantly clear I need to make a plan to help reach my goals. Time to make a new plan.
  • Never give up: I found the first few times I tried implement a plan, I didn't get to where I hoped for. However, because I had a family to take care of I didn't allow myself to become discouraged. As Napoleon Hill in his book, "Think and Grow Rich," asked Thomas Edison why it took 1,000 times inventing the light bulb." Edison replied, "I have simply found 999 ways how not to create a lightbulb.” Learning anything new often takes trial and error, and it's only by not giving up that you're sure to achieve your goal. If at first you don't succeed, be persistent.

Personal Goals: My goals for the rest of this mental transformation and beyond are to complete my dissertation, graduating in July 2014, bring my Organo Gold business to the next level, get better at saying “no”, especially to those things that will not help me realize my goals, write more articles, finish a novel, and creating financial freedom

Physical Goals: I need to lose a bunch of weight. I have been diagnosed with diabetes and morbid obesity. So I want to lose over 100 pounds. Been a yoyo dieter all my life, another failsafe or punishment mechanism.

Happy and Grateful Statement I am happy and grateful that I am a Diamond Consultant for Organo Gold coffee because I am able to be a good husband, father, son, brother, mentor, and author because I am able to have the freedom and time to write books and articles that entertain and inspire my readers in order to create positive social change.

Become a Champion

Become a champion of whatever you believe! A champion is someone who strives to win on a consistent basis. I'm a winner just by showing up and making a difference in my own life. There are three things you can do be a champion:

  • Be optimistic: As Napoleon Hill says, "If you can conceive it and believe it, you can achieve it." I believe I can make a difference even though I don't know how. I believe that God or the universe (what ever you call your higher power) will show me the way.
  • Identify your talents: We all have talents and sometimes we don't acknowledge them. It's time to take inventory of who you are. My talents are that I'm a good writer, speaker, computer programmer, and web designer.
  • HAVE FUN! The most important thing I learned so far is to have fun. Donald Trump said, In the Art of the Deal, "If you're not having fun, why do it."

Personal Goals: My goals for the rest of this mental transformation and beyond are to complete my dissertation, graduating in July 2014, bring my Organo Gold business to the next level, get better at saying “no”, especially to those things that will not help me realize my goals, write more articles, finish a novel, and creating financial freedom.

People Make the Difference

People make the difference no matter what. I learned that I cannot do things alone. I cannot build a business without the people who help me. My brother is a great help because he get's me and can usually anticipate what I'm thinking to the point of being scary. My son helps me wound the house and makes me laugh when I'm down. There is my Dissertation Cohort that help me write and stay on track. There are my mentors who guide me when I'm lost. So, yea, people do make a difference. Don't be afraid to reach out to family and friends when things get tough. More importantly reach out to them when everything is going great too because it lets them know that you don't always call when there is a problem.

All About Family

Today was all about family as I gathered with my wife's close and extended family at the Gallagher Christmas party. I had a great time catching up with all in-laws and their cousins wishing each other happy holidays. This family is very close, which I wish mine was as close. This actually made me reach out to my own cousins, who I see on very rare occasions like weddings, funerals, and such, but never just to hang out. It turned out that I made their day and they were happy to hear my voice. It was cool reconnecting and even though we are geographically far apart I plan to connect more through silly things like texts, emails, and Facebook. Not being a big fan of Facebook, I promised that I'd at least check in weekly. We agreed though that texting was much more efficient. So if you haven't called a relative in a while, give it a shot you might just make their day.

Have Fun

Have fun? Are you serious? Yes! Donald Trump said, in his book The Art of the Deal, "If you're not having fun, why do it?" That "it" can be anything from reading to running a multimillion dollar business. My "it" is writing. I love when thoughts flow from my head, through my fingers, to the keyboard, and finally appear on the screen. I feel that in some way I'm giving back by sharing my hopes, dreams, visions, and imaginings to entertain and inspire readers. Even these blog post allows me to have fun for just a few minutes a day. I have now gotten into the habit of writing everyday, so I believe I can crank out a many books as I can.

Persistence Pays Off

Persistence pays off eventually. I say that because I learned a long time ago that "if at first you don't succeed, be persistent. Shelton (2012) suggested that anyone who does not choose persistence will voluntarily withdraw from what ever they are involved in, and a person who does not meet personal standards will fail in life. This means that you need to dig deep and never give up and when you really dig deep and never give up, persistence pays off.

Rough Day

Today was a rough day. Not sure if it's the Arctic freeze, may be a cold coming on, or the fact that Christmas is coming and I still haven't found a job yet but the day started out slow. I have to admit I was feeling sorry for myself. I did watch some TV today mostly out of old habits but I picked myself up and went upstairs to take a nice hot shower, man that felt awesome. I shower daily but today I actually paid attention to the steam opening up my sinuses, the heat warming these old bones, and the cleansing of my spirit. I guess it was like a meditation where you pay attention to the now like taking a moment to smell the roses. Then I started to think of other things to help me get over a rough day and getting back in the game of life. Have a great idea for tomorrows post.

How I got through my rough day to get back in the game:

  1. Don't punish yourself for falling - I'm very hard on myself and used to punish myself by shutting down. Then I asked how's that working for ya? It wasn't. So I forgave myself and picked my self up and moved.
  2. Pick yourself up and do something - Like I said in my post on day 8 "Why do we fall?", we fall so we can pick ourselves up. That something consisted of the shower, this blog post, going to the store, and getting back to work on my dissertation.
  3. Listen to something motivational - It could be music, an audio book, or, in my case, a podcast. I like Michael Hyatt's - This is Your Life Podcast, episode #040: Get Out of That Funk
which helped me get over this rough day.

The Power of Friends

It's amazing what the power of friends can do. I had breakfast with my Organo Gold mentor Dr. Walker, my brother and sister-in-law to brainstorm our coffee business and do some training. I felt like I accomplished a lot and got motivated to work on my goals. I never realized how well my older brother Ray and I work well together or push each other to keep moving. There is no way, other then the lottery, to get rich quick but with teamwork and persistence you can accomplish anything.

Here are some ways to feel the power of friends:

  1. A simple phone call: Like on the game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" when a contestant gets stuck on a question, there is a life line called "Phone a Friend" where you call that friend who will try to help you answer the question. Well, life sometimes requires you to phone a friend when you are down and get stuck. Hopefully, they will do just that.
  2. Reach out and hug someone: This may sound weird but just reaching out to a friend for a hug can make a difference in your day.
  3. Make a friend: I have a habit of talking to strangers. My wife thinks I'm nuts for sitting down and talking to total strangers. I like people and find the way people think interesting. I made a good friend just by talking to a veteran from WorldWar II to discover he was on the crew of a B-17 during the war. I wanted to know what it was like so I asked. What I found were some key gems for a story that I will write after I graduate. You just never know who you'll bump into. I met Depok Chopra and Mark Victory Hansen (no relation) at a seminar, Took classes with Tony Robbins and Dan Millman, and bumped into W. Clement Stone in line at the bank.

Get Out of Your Own Way

The greatest lesson I learned was that I had to get out of my own way by calming my mind and focus on the task at hand. Palumbo (2013) suggested that “getting out of your own way” means putting aside anxiety, self doubt, self-esteem, fear, career pressure, mental blocks, or critical inner voices. Sometimes life gets in the way and stops us in our tracks but it turns out that our fears or striving for perfection get in the way. Therefore, there must be some steps to help you get out of your own way.

3 steps for getting out of your own way:

  1. Take the 30 Day Mental Fast - Taking this 30 day mental fast has been the greatest way for me to start getting mental clarity and getting out of my own stuff.
  2. Meditation - Calming my mind and visualizing my goals has been helpful in focusing my thoughts and participating in activities that will help get closer to my dreams.
  3. Don't be so hard on yourself - I'm my own worst enemy and very critical of myself which has created those blocks sometimes stopping me in my tracks.

Change is an Inside Job

Change is an inside job not an outside one. What I mean is, if you want to change any part of your life you have to start with yourself. This is the one lesson I learned as part of this challenge and was reminded as I listened to the Millionaire Mentorship Call tonight. The essence of the call was that change is an inside job and it hit a chord with me. I could change my things around me which may help in the short term because it masks the real problem which is my perception of the outside world.

Here are some steps to take to change yourself from the inside:

  1. Decide on a direction: Set a goal. One that will drive you forward and create personal growth. Pick a direction for your life and start working towards it.
  2. Represent yourself as strong: This means don't show weakness by indecision or not being prepared for success. Move forward with purpose, dedication, and persistence.
  3. Ask yourself, Am I ready to succeed?: I pray the answer is yes. When I asked this of myself, I found that I was not only ready for a new beginning but also to be successful at reaching my goals.
