Take A MulliganTake a Mulligan

To take a mulligan (2013) means that a golfer is given a free shot when the previous shot was poorly played. Basically, a second chance or a "Do Over". When I first learned how to play golf I was introduced to the mulligan. You can probably imagine why. No, I won't paint a picture but let me tell you the guy that owned the house next to the course knows. This season of the Biggest Loser was all about second chances which made me think about what I really wanted to do with my life.

I've had a few mulligans writing my dissertation. I was laid off in August 2013 and have been working on that second chance. Finding work has been tough because I let myself get comfortable with my last job and didn't upgrade my skills to keep up with the market. Even though, you can't hop in your delorean or timey-wimey magical blue box (for all you whovians) and redo your life. You can, however, start each day as though it was a clean slate.

Personal Goals: My goals for 2014 are to complete my dissertation, graduating in July 2014, bring my Organo Gold business to the next level, get better at saying “no”, especially to those things that will not help me realize my goals, write more articles, finish a novel, and creating financial freedom.

Happy and Grateful Statement I am happy and grateful that I am a Diamond Consultant for Organo Gold coffee because I am able to be a good husband, father, son, brother, mentor, and author because I am able to have the freedom and time to write books and articles that entertain and inspire my readers in order to create positive social change.

Goals for 2014

Goals for 2014? Where did the last 30 days go, let alone 2013. This has been a great and humbling experience. One thing I learned was that I can change. When I started I was lost, had no direction, and now I have many paths to explore. I have also discovered a way to make a quick plan to reach those goals. I managed to research a little better, gain more focus, and write more on a daily basis. I highly recommend doing a 30 Mental Fast regularly just as a means to regroup, refocus, and reenergize. I refocused my personal goals and my Happy and Grateful Statement. Start making your dreams a reality.

Upon Reflection

Upon Reflection following are answers from Day 26: Brainstorming questions: What do I want to be remembered for? Who am I as a person, writer, or scholar? This was harder then I thought but here it goes. After meditating on those questions I did a 60 second brainstorming session and came up with this list:

What do I want to be remembered for? Who am I as a person, writer, or scholar? Being a good husband, father, son, brother, smart, worthy, outstanding, risk taker, courageous, leader amongst leaders, public speaker, teacher, professor, author, novelist, screenwriter, published, publisher, scholar-practitioner, note worthy, contributor, prosperous, friend, reflective, entertaining, healthy, energetic, provider, knowledgeable, an expert, inspiration, financially free, and made a difference.

I thought I'd come up with more; this will do. These are the words that I will start to build my brand with. I will also use these words to brainstorm books, podcast episodes, or whatever else I undertake.

Personal Goals: My goals for the rest of this mental transformation and beyond are to complete my dissertation, graduating in July 2014, bring my Organo Gold business to the next level, get better at saying “no”, especially to those things that will not help me realize my goals, write more articles, finish a novel, and creating financial freedom.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas! Had another nice and quiet day. Made smoked turkey for Christmas dinner with my wife, son, brother & mother. The day was spent with my family. It is always interesting to see how low key Christmas was this year. Our tiny faux tree stood in the window with lights all aglow. I liked that we didn't have arguments this year because not all my family was there. Sibling rivalry runs deep and tempers flare every now and then. This year, Peace!

Night Before Christmas

The Night before Christmas was nice and quiet. Had lunch with my wife, son, brother & mother. The evening was spent with my wife's family. It is always a treat seeing the cousins having fun and bonding over such simple things like gifts, Skype calls to relatives in Switzerland, and great food.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming (2013) is the pondering of ideas in order to come up with a solution, a new book idea, overcoming writers block, or finding your brand. Brainstorming is something I like to do for fun or work. I like brainstorming to come up with screenplay, novel, or dissertation ideas. I've helped others brainstorm business, writing, or things to do on the weekend.

As a result of this exercise I have decided to start brainstorming my brand. What do I want to be remembered for? Who am I as a person, writer, or scholar? These questions are the starting point for my brainstorming sessions. I want to have an identity starting in 2014.

Become What You Think About

Become what you think about constantly! Have you ever told yourself that you are sick and tired of this, that, or anything and then become physically sick? If you said yes then you know what I'm talking about. Have you ever turned down a date because you think that person is out of your league? If you said yes then you know what I mean. Basically, this is a self-fulfilling prophecy where you create a picture in your mind of what you want and your mind and body find a way to make it happen. Napoleon Hill said it best, "If you can conceive it and believe it, you can achieve it." I believe I can make a difference even though I don't know how. I believe that God or the universe (what ever you call your higher power) will show me the way.

I see that Ph.D. on my diploma in July of 2014. I see myself walking across the stage. I see myself financially free as a Diamond Consultant for Organo Gold coffee. I see my name on book covers of all the books that I write to inspire, entertain, and bring hope to my readers. I see myself speaking in front of large audiences, on TV, and other forms of media spreading inspiration and hope to others and make a difference in the world.

Creating the Plan

Creating the Plan will be my first step to accomplish my goals.

Here are the steps I plan take to create this plan:

  • Review my Big Why: Why so I really want to do this
  • Create my Bucket List: I need to list those things I want to accomplish, some refer to this list as a "Bucket List", in my life.
  • Pick a goal from the list and go for it

The Big Why: On Day 1 I talked about my Big Why.  So here is the list that I came up with then:

  1. Be a good provider and inspiration for my family
  2. Freedom to travel
  3. Surround myself with like-minded friends
  4. Freedom and money to write novels that entertain and inspire
  5. Finish my Ph.D.
  6. Make a difference in the world
  7. Be an instrument for positive social change.

Things I didn't think of then in the categories of fitness and faith:

  • Get into shape and lose wight so I can fit on a plane comfortably
  • Have a better relationship with my creator

Personal Goals: My goals for the rest of this mental transformation and beyond are to complete my dissertation, graduating in July 2014, bring my Organo Gold business to the next level, get better at saying “no”, especially to those things that will not help me realize my goals, write more articles, finish a novel, and creating financial freedom.
